IntroductionIn today's article, we'll explore a Marshall.D.Teach OP16-080 list, one of the new leaders from OP16 - The Time of Battle. Teach is one of the most promising leaders in this set, both individually and alongside his support cards. Let's see how he works and go through some of his main strategies.Marshall, the LeaderMarshall.D.Teach OP16-080 is a yellow/black The Seven Warlords of the Sea/Blackbeard Pirates leader with 5000 power and 4 life. His first effect works in the opponent's turn and makes all your characters cost +1 more. This is quite interesting, as it essentially makes your board more resilient (particularly against effects that remove cards based on their cost) and makes some enemy answers a bit worse. His second effect is what actually makes him stand out, though. Once per turn, when the opponent attacks, you may discard a card with Trigger from your hand to redirect that attack to your leader or one of your Blackbeard Pirates characters. It won't stop the attack but completely change the way the opponent will have to set it up. After all, you can use it to protect characters that seem vulnerable and redirect attacks to characters that have relevant On K.O. effects. This is the most important detail in this strategy. Blackbeard is a pretty complicated archetype. Each enemy attack will force you and your opponent to make several decisions, and you always need to be one or two turns ahead in planning. The DeckThe list we'll see today plays almost the entire Blackbeard Pirates base released in OP16, but it also plays some of the best black cards from OP09, particularly Laffitte OP09-095, Jesus Burgess OP09-086, Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093, and My Era...Begins!! OP09-096.A player called Potaka used it to win a tournament. Here it is:Early GameVan Augur OP16-103, Doc Q OP16-109, and Vasco Shot OP16-110 are small but make your leader a lot better. All of them have Triggers that activate their own On K.O. effects, so they can create value when they come from your life pile and when you put them in combat and they're knocked out afterward.Van Augur OP16-103 draws a card and gives the enemy leader or one of the opponent's characters -3000 power on their turn as long as you're playing a Blackbeard Pirates leader. This interacts really well with your main strategy, redirecting attacks, because you can use it to make an enemy attack really uncomfortable and mess with their plans for the rest of the turn.Doc Q OP16-109 draws a card and knocks out up to 2 enemy characters that cost 1 or less. It is more specific, but its Counter +2000 makes up for it. Vasco Shot OP16-110 draws a card and taps an enemy character that costs 6 or less. It is probably the most relevant card in this group, particularly when the opponent is trying to save one of their attackers or blockers for the following turn.Mid-Game or Defensive CharactersCatarina Devon OP16-104 seems small for what it costs, but it plays an interesting role. First, it has a Trigger that draws a card and lets you play a Blackbeard Pirates character that costs 1 from your trash pile. But its On Attack effect also lets you set its base power to match an enemy character's that turn. It is very similar to Mr.2.Bon.Kurei(Bentham) EB01-061.Sanjuan.Wolf OP16-106 is a bit more defensive. When it is knocked out, it draws a card and lets you set your leader's or one of your characters' base power to 7000 that turn.Borsalino EB04-058 is one of the strongest yellow cards in the current meta. It is a blocker, has 6000 power, and, when it enters play, if you have 2 cards in your life pile or less, it lets you get the top card in your deck and put it in your life pile. In this list, it is even better because it plays a lot of Triggers. You might not know exactly what you put in your life pile, but gaining life in a deck like this, which can turn it into a resource, is quite interesting. As for Shiryu OP16-108, it doubles down on that. When it enters play, it lets you discard a card to put a Blackbeard Pirates character that costs 6 or less from your trash pile on top of your life pile, face-up. Considering many small characters in this deck have Triggers or great On K.O. effects, this card is great. You can use it to choose what you'll get next from your life pile, and it also stays in play as a pretty big body, as it has 8000 power. The Black BaseLaffitte OP09-095 is the classic searcher in this archetype. It lets you look at the top 5 cards in your deck and get a Blackbeard Pirates card you find there. As this deck only works if you find Shiryu OP16-108, Marshall.D.Teach OP16-119, Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093, and the small OP16 pieces, Laffitte is great. It will set you up with exactly what you need to progress your main game plan.My Era...Begins!! OP09-096 is similar, but it's an event. It lets you look at the top 3 cards in your deck, get a Blackbeard Pirates card that isn't this one, and trash the rest. Doing this won't be any problem because Shiryu OP16-108 and a few other cards that interact with your life pile also interact with your trash pile. Furthermore, this event also has a Trigger that activates its main effect, which fits your leader really well.Jesus Burgess OP09-086 grows as your trash pile grows. It gains +1000 power for each four cards in your trash pile and can't be knocked out by enemy effects. This list naturally puts cards in the trash pile by discarding them, losing them in combat, or putting them there manually, so it will grow quite easily and soon turn into a wall.Late GameZehahahahaha! OP16-116 only works if you have 10 DON!! in play. If so, you can play a Marshall.D.Teach character from your hand and then get the top card in the opponent's life pile and put it in their hand. It's a burn effect.Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093 gives this list a way to end matches with a bit more control. It has 12000 power, Blocker, and an ability that counters the enemy leader's effect when this card enters play. It also counters a character's effect and prevents it from attacking until the end of the opponent's next turn. It's heavy and will be quite threatening in play because of its Blocker, but it is critical in this strategy and your main way to win as well.Marshall.D.Teach OP16-119 is another pretty expensive card in this list. It costs 8, has 10000 power, and, when it enters play, it lets you look at the top 3 cards in your deck and put up to one of them on the top of your life pile. This effect lets you pick the most relevant Trigger for your particular situation and put it where you want it, and it's another way to turn life cards into resources. Furthermore, its Trigger is also pretty important. It counters an enemy character's effect that turn and then knocks out a character that costs 5 or less. It can completely change the opponent's attack turn, and you'll see it and use it often to follow up because Teach's effect puts cards in your life pile. How To Play ItEarly on, you must look for Laffitte OP09-095 or My Era...Begins!! OP09-096 so that you can set up your hand. You don't need to attack nonstop at this point because this strategy is more powerful when you make each enemy attack hurt the opponent in some way. Putting small characters with On K.O. effects in play is also quite helpful, particularly when you have cards with Trigger in your hand to activate your leader and redirect attacks. In the mid-game, Borsalino EB04-058, Shiryu OP16-108, and Catarina Devon OP16-104 are your best cards. Borsalino will give you more life, Shiryu turns your trash pile into an extension of your life pile, and Catarina is great in your hand as a +2000 Counter. She is also a great beater in a pinch. The most important decision at this point of the match is when and how to use your leader's effect. Redirecting an attack to protect a character might be too hasty, and spending cards with Trigger at the wrong time can make you defenseless against bigger attacks. In the late game, you'll focus mainly on your two big Teaches. Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093 controls effects and holds down your defenses as a blocker, whereas Marshall.D.Teach OP16-119 lets you interact with your life pile and has 10000 power. Zehahahahaha! OP16-116 complements this plan, as it lets you put in play a Teach and also burns the opponent's life outside of combat.Final WordsThis leader reminds me a lot of Donquixote Doflamingo OP14-060. After all, its effect redirects attacks and allows you to use the best On K.O. effect at the moment. Obviously, they use pretty different resources to do that, and it makes sense that Teach uses Trigger cards as fuel. Overall, Teach will force you to invest some time in him to master him. He rewards those who put in effort and time with great matches, laughs, and wins. What do you think? Tell us your thoughts in our comment section below.Thank you for reading, and see you next time!
